Log onto the website and look for employment opportunities. Once you identify a position that you are interested in, you may apply online. You will be required to answer questions concerning your experience, background, education and/or certifications.

Driving Requirements
An applicant will be disqualified for traffic convictions under any of the following conditions:
- One conviction within five years prior to the date of application, for:
-
Voluntary or involuntary manslaughter resulting from the operation of a motor vehicle; OR
-
Driving a motor vehicle or being in actual physical control while having unlawful blood alcohol level or while under the influence of alcoholic beverages or any substances controlled under any state or federal law; OR
-
Attempting to elude police.

One conviction within three years prior to the date of application, for:
-
Driving a motor vehicle while driver’s license is suspended or revoked for reasons other than financial responsibility.

Reckless driving.
-
-
No more than three moving traffic convictions within three years of date of application, consideration is on a case-by-case basis.
- A chargeable accident within three years of date of application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Traffic conviction record, with points accumulated resulting in the suspension of a driver license within three years of the date of application.

Suspended or revoked driver’s license for one of the following reasons within one year prior to the date of application.

Failure to attend court ordered driving school; OR
-
Failure to pay two or more traffic fines. The circumstances resulting in the nonpayment of only one traffic fine will be evaluated on an individual basis and may not disqualify the applicant; OR
-
Financial responsibility (insurance, cancellation, etc.) will be evaluated on an individual basis and may or may not disqualify an applicant.
- Failure to submit to a chemical test for intoxication may disqualify the applicant upon review.

Convictions by City definition will include a plea of “no contest” or a judicial decision to withhold adjudication. Cases listed beyond time frame will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Background Standards
Applicant will be disqualified if:
- Applicant convicted of a felony crime within five (5) years of the date of application;
OR - Applicant convicted of a misdemeanor crime within three (3) years of the date of
application, which will be handled on a case-by-case basis; OR - Applicant has been convicted of ANY domestic violence offense, within five (5) years
of the date of application which will be handled on a case-by-case basis; OR - Applicant has any pending misdemeanor or felony charges; OR
- Applicant’s other criminal activity or history that may or may not disqualify them will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
- Misdemeanor (FS 775.08) shall mean any criminal offense that is punishable under the laws of this state, or that would be punishable if committed in this state, by a termof imprisonment in a county correctional facility, except an extended term, not in excess of one year. Per F.S. 775.083, a misdemeanor fine shall not exceed $1,000.
- Felony (F.S. 775.08) shall mean any criminal offense that is punishable under the laws of this state, or that would be punishable if committed in this state, by death or imprisonment in a state penitentiary. A person shall be imprisoned in the state penitentiary for each sentence which, except an extended term, exceeds one year.
(*Applicant may be disqualified if convicted any time of crimes of perjury, lascivious acts, exposure of sexual organs, prostitution, stalking, or the manufacturing, sale or delivery of drugs.)
FALSE INFORMATION
An applicant will be disqualified if they have knowingly presented false oral or written information during their consideration for employment. False information detected after employment will be grounds for dismissal.
Drug-Free Workplace
The City of Palm Bay has a Drug-Free Workplace Program (DFWP) to make sure that City employees abuse no drugs or alcohol. The DFWP is established in accordance with the following statutory authority:

The City of Palm Bay screens all newly hired employees for drugs and alcohol and withholds offers of hire if abuse is detected.

The City of Palm Bay is a participant in the E-Verify process which determines the eligibility of employees to work in the United States.
Veterans' Preference
Veterans’ Preference for eligibility in employment will be extended to certain Veterans and spouses of Veterans who are Florida residents according to Florida State Statute 295.07.
Section 295.07, Florida Statutes, extends veterans’ preference to:
- A veteran with a service-connected disability who is eligible for or receiving compensation, disability retirement, or pension under public laws administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.
- The spouse of a veteran who cannot qualify for employment because of a total and permanent service-connected disability, or the spouse of a veteran missing in action, captured, or forcibly detained by a foreign power.
- A wartime veteran as defined in Fla. Stat. s. 101(14) who has served on active duty for at least 1 day during a wartime period, excluding active duty for training, and who was discharged under honorable conditions from the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
- The unremarried widow or widower of a veteran who died of a service-connected disability.
- Mother, father, legal guardian, or unremarried widow or widower of a member of the US Armed Forces who died in the line of duty under combat conditions, as verified by the US Department of Defense.
- A veteran as defined in Fla. Stat. s. 1.01(14). Active duty for training may not be eligible under this paragraph.
- A current member of any reserve component of the US Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard.
Veterans’ Preference Required Documents:
- Veterans, disabled veterans, spouses of disabled veterans, and family members shall furnish a Department of Defense document, commonly known as Form DD-214 or military discharge papers, or equivalent certification from the DVA, listing military status, dates of service, and Character of Discharge.
- Disabled Veterans shall also furnish a document from the Department of Defense, the DVA, or the Department certifying that the Veteran has a service-connected disability.
- Spouses of disabled veterans shall also furnish either a certification from the Department of Defense or the DVA that the veteran is totally and permanently disabled or an identification card issued by the department; spouses shall also furnish evidence of marriage to the veteran and a statement that the spouse is still married to the veteran at the time of the application for employment; the spouse shall also submit proof that the disabled veteran cannot qualify for employment because of the service-connected disability.
- Spouses of persons on active duty shall furnish a document from the Department of Defense or the DVA certifying that the person on active duty is listed as missing in action, captured in line of duty, or forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government or power; such spouses shall also furnish evidence of marriage and a statement that the spouse is married to the person on active duty at the time of that application for employment.
- The mother, father, legal guardian, or unmarried widow or widower of a deceased veteran shall furnish a document from the Department of Defense showing the death of a service member while on duty status under combat-related conditions or the DVA certifying the service-connected death of the veteran and shall further furnish evidence of marriage. The legal guardian shall show the proper court documents establishing the legal authority for the Guardian.
- Current reserve and Florida National Guard members shall provide a letter stating they are a current member of any reserve component of the US Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard signed by the military human resources department or the commanding officer (or equivalent officer) in charge of their military service.
