The Atlantic hurricane season is officially from June 1^st to November 30^th. Although hurricanes have been known to occur outside of these months, these are the dates that were selected to encompass over 97% of tropical activity. Tornado Safety Tips

• The safest place to be is an underground shelter, basement or safe room.
• A small, windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level of a sturdy building is the next safest alternative.
• In multi-story buildings, interior stairwells are good choices if no windowless areas are available. Do not use elevators.
• Mobile homes are not safe during tornadoes or other severe winds.
• During a tornado watch (not warning), sleep with your shoes, helmet, and cell phone nearby.

Warning or Watch - Know the Difference

Tornado Watch: Be Prepared!

Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Review and discuss your emergency plans and check supplies and your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.

Tornado Warning: Take Action!

A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. There is imminent danger to life and property. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area (around the size of a city) that may be impacted.

School Closure Procedures

In the event of a weather emergency, the superintendent of Brevard Public Schools (BPS) is the only person who will give the directive that schools are to close due to extreme weather conditions. Should the district close, BPS will communicate the closure to parents, teachers and staff through their rapid notification system. This will come in the form of voicemail and email. Subscribers to the BPS mobile app will also receive a push notification and those who have registered their cell phone number will receive a text message.
