On April 23, Chief Augello led the men and women of the Palm Bay Police Department in the annual memorial and wreath-laying ceremony honoring Officers Grogan and Johnson, who lost their lives in the line of duty 36 years ago. Any long-time resident of Brevard County will never forget that day. What began as an ordinary Thursday became one of the darkest in our city’s history. A lone gunman opened fire in what would become one of Florida’s first mass shootings, forever changing the lives of so many. Four civilians lost their lives. Fourteen more were wounded. And among the first to respond—without hesitation—were Officers Johnson and Grogan. They ran toward danger when others ran from it. They did what heroes do. They gave everything to protect others, and they paid the ultimate price. Their blood—shed that day in service to this community, is part of the very foundation of our city. It is written into the fabric of who we are as Palm Bay. And so, we gather every year not only to mourn their loss, but to remember their courage, to honor their sacrifice, and to carry their legacy forward. Congressman Mike Haridopolos was also in attendance and delivered heartfelt remarks, recognizing the bravery and enduring legacy of these two fallen heroes.
It is my distinct honor to welcome our new City Manager, Matthew Morton. Mr. Morton brings over 25 years of diverse experience in both the public and private sectors, and we are proud to welcome a proven innovator and strategic leader to our city. His track record speaks for itself, from advancing transformative “citizen-centric” governance in Palm Coast to leading a digital-first response during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Morton exemplifies the values of transparency, adaptability, and service before self. With his expertise in municipal finance, infrastructure development, performance management, and economic growth, we are confident that Mr. Morton is the right leader to help usher in a new era of progress and opportunity for Palm Bay. On behalf of the Palm Bay City Council and our entire community, I warmly welcome Mr. Morton to Team Palm Bay. I want to give a huge shout-out to Palm Bay Fire Rescue! For the last couple of weeks, crews were hard at work battling multiple brush fires across Palm Bay. Hundreds of acres burned in different parts of the city, creating challenging conditions for our team. Thankfully, no homes were lost, no significant property damage occurred, and most importantly, no injuries were reported. As dry conditions continue, Palm Bay Fire Rescue urges everyone to stay vigilant and respect the burn ban currently in effect citywide.
