Citizen Patrol Vehicle

The Palm Bay Police Department Volunteer Citizen Observer Program has over 50 active participants who contribute thousands of hours of volunteer support to the department and our community. Each incoming VCOP is required to undergo a background check, along with duty-specific training. They provide non-enforcement duties such as traffic control, residential vacation checks, neighborhood and commercial security checks, parade and city activity support. The volunteers are also an extension of the Community Resource Section of the police department, increasing the positive interaction between citizens and law enforcement.

Palm Bay Police Department VCOPs provide support in 2 specific areas: patrol (on the road) and administrative (front desk). Patrols are manned with 2 volunteers and conducted in specially designated vehicles, with assigned sectors to ensure a presence throughout the city. While on patrol, assistance provided by these volunteers include: school crossing guard support, traffic support for accidents/crime scenes/natural disasters, VIN verifications for citizens registering vehicles, residential house checks, courier support to the State Attorney’s office, vehicle transport, on top of routine neighborhood and commercial security checks. Patrol support is provided 7 days per week. Administrative support includes manning the front desk of the police department, Monday through Friday from 0800-1600. Front Desk personnel refer citizens to the proper departments, schedule and provide ink fingerprinting, verify Affidavits of Compliance, monitor access to the building, and provide escort services. In addition, shredding support is provided to the entire department, along with administrative support for training and supply.
