Mayor Rob Medina Releases August 2025 Mayor's Message

Post Date:08/01/2025 3:06 PM

It's a great day, Palm Bay!

I hope you had a chance to attend the Second Annual Battle of the Badges, where the Palm Bay Police Department and Palm Bay Fire Rescue faced off once again in a high-energy, community-focused basketball game. This year, Palm Bay Fire Rescue came out on top, claiming the trophy in a hard-fought matchup! A huge thank you to both teams for their sportsmanship and commitment to making this event such a fun and meaningful experience for our community. We're already looking forward to next year. Will PD reclaim the title, or will Fire go back-to-back? Stay tuned!

This month, we honor the extraordinary life and service of Palm Bay’s own hero, Silver Star Medal recipient Arcadio Santiago-Rodriguez, who passed away at the age of 101. Private Santiago-Rodriguez served in the U.S. Army’s 65th Infantry Regiment, which later received Congress’s highest honor, the Congressional Gold Medal.

The U.S. Army’s Silver Star Citation reads as follows:

On 27 April 1951 near Hingbok, Korea, while approaching through a pass 4 reinforced enemy battalion was fired on by the 3rd platoon, company K, which had taken a blocking position astride the pass. When his squad leader was mortally wounded Private Santiago-Rodriguez voluntarily assumed command of the squad.

• Receiving orders to withdraw, he organized the squad and led it to a more tannable position.

 • During a later assault to drive the enemy from the ridge Private Santiago-Rodriguez volunteered to carry a wounded comrade to safety.

 • Suddenly encountering five enemy soldiers, he placed his wounded comrade on the ground and opened fire on the enemy. After killing four hostile troops, he captured the fifth and forced him to evacuate the wounded man to the battalion aide stations. The gallantry and initiative displayed by Private Santiago-Rodriguez reflect a great credit upon himself and the military service.

He went on to serve 30 years in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant. Even after his military career, he continued to serve his community, working for 20 years as a Brevard Public Schools bus driver.

I’m proud to share that we received final numbers from this year’s Mayor’s Ball, and we raised over $40,000 in support of Space Coast Discovery. Thanks to the generosity of our attendees, we were able to make a meaningful impact on children with developmental challenges here in Brevard County.

The funds raised will help Space Coast Discovery continue its mission of providing tailored education, therapy, and life skills training to students in a supportive, inclusive environment. Their work changes lives, and I’m grateful to everyone who contributed to making this event a success.

Palm Bay continues to show up when it matters most, and this is just one more example of what we can accomplish when we come together for a cause bigger than ourselves.

Join me in congratulating The Shack Riverfront Restaurant & Tiki Bar on becoming the third quarter Mayor's Business Spotlight Program winner for 2025! On August 4, we proudly honor the birthday of the United States Coast Guard, 235 years of faithful service to our nation. Since its founding in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton, the Coast Guard has stood watch over our shores, always ready to answer the call. From lifesaving rescue missions to defending our homeland and protecting our environment, these brave men and women serve with unmatched dedication and heart. To every member of the Coast Guard, past and present, we thank you. Your courage, commitment, and sacrifice remind us what it truly means to serve. Happy Birthday to the United States Coast Guard! Semper Paratus—Always Ready. #OOHRAAH

Join the Palm Bay Police Department on Tuesday, August 5 from 5 to 7:30PM at Fred Poppe Regional Park for National Night Out! Bring the whole family for an evening of fun, food, and getting to know the people who serve our city. You'll have the chance to meet your local officers and explore our Police Department's specialty units. There will also be a live SWAT demonstration! Enjoy food trucks, local vendors, and music while getting a closer look at the people and equipment that help keep our city safe. I hope to see you there!

The first day of school is right around the corner, and I would like to wish all our Palm Bay students a safe and happy school year! A new school year means new opportunities to learn, to grow, and to achieve great things. Whether you're starting kindergarten, heading into your senior year, or anything in between, this is your time to shine! Drivers, be cautious and watch for kids riding their bikes and walking to school.

I'd like to invite our residents to join us for a special event honoring the life and service of Sergeant Frank Tobar. On Tuesday, August 20, at 10:00AM, the City of Palm Bay will hold a plaque unveiling ceremony at Sacrifice Park to recognize Sgt. Tobar's lasting impact on our community. He was best known as the driving force behind the Palm Bay Police Explorers Program, where he mentored and inspired countless young people. Sgt. Tobar served with dedication, integrity, and heart—leaving behind a legacy that continues to guide those who knew him. This ceremony offers us the opportunity to come together as a city to reflect, remember, and pay tribute to one of our own. I encourage all who are able to please attend and help us honor his memory.

Last but certainly not least, August 30 is a very special day, and I would like to wish my beautiful wife a happy birthday! Thank you for being a beacon of positivity and strength. Your presence lights up every room. Wishing you a day filled with joy, laughter, and all the happiness you deserve. Enjoy your special day. Happy Birthday, Lissette!
