Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina Releases March 2025 Mayor's Message

It's a great day Palm Bay!

Post Date:03/03/2025

I am honored to celebrate Women's History Month this March and, therefore, would like to highlight the incredible achievements of Janet Petro, the first female Director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. A true trailblazer in aerospace and leadership, Petro has dedicated her career to advancing space exploration and paving the way for future generations of women in STEM. A former U.S. Army officer and a champion for innovation, she has played a key role in shaping the future of spaceflight, including leading Kennedy Space Center’s transformation into a multi-user spaceport. Her leadership continues to inspire women and young girls to reach for the stars.

As Ramadan continues through the month of March, we take a moment to recognize and appreciate the incredible religious freedom that makes our nation great. The United States stands as a beacon of liberty and respect for all faiths, allowing individuals to practice their beliefs freely and without fear. To our Muslim community members observing this sacred month of reflection, prayer, and fasting, we extend our warmest wishes. Your dedication to faith and service enriches the fabric of our nation, reminding us that our strength lies in unity and mutual respect. As we celebrate the freedom of religion—a cornerstone of our democracy—we honor the values that make us the greatest of nations: tolerance, respect, and the unwavering belief that all people should have the right to worship freely. To all observing, Ramadan Mubarak! May this month bring peace, blessings, and fulfillment.

Baseball is in the air folks! Opening day is upon us for Palm Bay East and West Little League, along with the amazing girls fast pitch softball league. This opening day isn’t just a kickoff to a season—it’s a celebration of teamwork, determination, and the pure joy of the game that inspires every player on the field. Baseball is more than just a game—it's a dynamic classroom where young players learn invaluable life lessons. Every inning is a chance to master conflict resolution, as teammates navigate challenges and disagreements with respect and teamwork. The sport inspires a strong work ethic and fuels motivation, encouraging players to set goals, work hard, and celebrate every small victory. Beyond the diamond, the lessons learned—resilience in the face of setbacks, the importance of discipline, and the power of camaraderie—carry over into every aspect of life, making baseball a game that molds character as much as it hones athletic skills.

Join us for some exciting upcoming events in March!

First, we have a ribbon cutting for the Ken Greene Memorial Dog Park on Friday, March 14 at 11 AM at 550 Riviera Dr NE. Ken Greene was a proud Marine Corps veteran, a devoted family man, and a respected member of the community. He dedicated his life to public service, serving as a Palm Bay City Council Member. He was actively involved in numerous ministries at Our Lady of Grace Church, volunteered at Port Malabar Elementary School, and founded the Sunday Shower Ministry at Daily Bread in Melbourne. Ken provided dedicated service to the City of Palm Bay as a member of City Council from 2002-2005 and from 2010-2014.

Secondly, we have a ribbon cutting for the newly enhanced Sacrifice Park, a cherished memorial dedicated to first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the Palm Bay and Brevard County community. The event will take place on Friday, March 28, at 9:00 AM at Sacrifice Park, located between City Hall and the Franklin T. DeGroodt Public Library.

Finally, on Saturday, March 29, we will be conducting City Manager applicant interviews based on the applicants selected by Council at the March 20th Regular Council Meeting. This will be a Special Council Meeting in City Council Chambers. The meeting is open to the public, and I encourage you all to come out and hear from the candidates firsthand.

On March 29 we recognize National Vietnam War Veterans Day. A time to honor the brave men and women who served our nation with courage and sacrifice. To our Vietnam Veterans—thank you. Your service, resilience, and unwavering dedication to our country will never be forgotten. We recognize the sacrifices you and your families made, and we are eternally grateful for your commitment to defending our freedoms. Though your return home may not have been met with the gratitude you deserved, please know that today and every day, we honor you. Welcome home!

A little update on our GO Roads Paving Program: In November 2018, Palm Bay residents voted to approve a $150 million GO Roads Bond to repave city roads. Since then, the City has completed over 418 miles of road improvements in several areas of the city, including Eldron, Garvey, Port Malabar, sections of Emerson, Palm Bay Colony, Kirby Industrial Parks, and more. Several road projects are still in progress, with some under construction, others in the design phase, and more preparing for bidding. We have made significant progress, completing Phases 1 and 2. Phase 3 is 50% complete with the remaining areas out to bid. Work through Phase 4 is funded and in the design process. Phase 5 is currently unfunded. However, the City is actively exploring alternative funding options to move forward. Visit www.pbfl.org/GORoads for more information.

This April, we proudly recognize National Arab American Heritage Month, celebrating the rich history, culture, and contributions of Arab Americans across our nation. From science and business to public service and the arts, their impact is felt across every field. As a nation built on freedom, we celebrate the values of heritage, unity, and inclusion that make us stronger together.
