Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina Releases January 2024 Mayor's Message

Happy New Year, Palm Bay!

Post Date:01/02/2024

As we embark on the journey of a new year, I find myself reflecting on the positive developments that unfolded in 2023. Despite encountering various challenges, the City of Palm Bay experienced substantial growth and prosperity throughout the past year. We achieved numerous milestones, hosted even MORE city events, initiated new projects, and welcomed new businesses to Palm Bay. My unwavering commitment to all of you is to continue to steer this remarkable city towards a better, brighter future.

On that same note, I would like to recognize and honor that January 1st is a doubly special holiday in Haiti. In addition to celebrating the beginning of a new year, New Year’s Day is also Haitian Independence Day.

The weather may have canceled this year's Family Christmas Extravaganza, but we were still able to bless our community and honor our partners by giving Christmas away. Thank you to everyone who came out for the raffle giveaway. Next year will be bigger and better!

I want to send out a special thank you to the Brevard County Commission for approving $250,000 to further enhance Sacrifice Park, a memorial dedicated to honoring first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the Palm Bay and Brevard County community. The City had over a 50% match for this request, to include $150,000 in state appropriations and $100,000 in private donations. It has been my continued mission to give this community and our valued first responders a memorial of which to be proud, and thanks to the County Commission, we can now achieve that goal. I am so #PalmBayProud of everyone who had a part in this initiative, and we are excited to begin this project in 2024. We have a responsibility to ensure that our fallen heroes know that we will never forget the blood that was shed on the very fabric of our City and our County. Never will we forget.

Please join me in congratulating Trattoria Bella for being chosen as the 2024 first quarter winner of the Mayor’s Business Spotlight Program. Trattoria Bella, which is located at 2155 Palm Bay Road NE, offers a taste of little Italy right here in Palm Bay. Owners Julia Kogutiak and Chef Fabrizio Pintus, along with their amazing staff, create a delightful dining experience that brings out the Italian in all of us. A true hidden gem here in Palm Bay, Trattoria Bella has been a destination for foodies across the nation, and their customer base continues to grow. If you haven’t visited this establishment, it is such a unique hidden gem for our City, and I highly recommend it!

January is designated as Human Trafficking Prevention Month, which serves as a poignant reminder of the urgency to address this global issue that robs countless individuals of their freedom and dignity. By acknowledging the gravity of the situation, we empower ourselves to take action and support initiatives aimed at prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation. Through education, advocacy, and collaboration, we can strive to create a world where every person is afforded the right to live free from the shackles of exploitation. Let us stand together, amplifying our voices and fostering a culture that refuses to tolerate the trafficking of human lives.

This year, as part of its 60th Anniversary Celebration, the National Judicial College set out to identify and honor 60 especially courageous judges. I would like to congratulate Judge Majeed for being selected for this recognition. Thank you for being an exemplary judge committed to the rule of law and for providing equal justice under law, even when circumstances make that difficult. You make the world a more just place.

On January 16, we honor the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On this day, we reflect on the profound impact of Dr. King's unwavering commitment to civil rights and his tireless efforts to eradicate racial discrimination. Martin Luther King Jr. Day stands as a powerful tribute to the lasting legacy of a visionary leader who championed equality, justice, and unity. In 1963 Dr. King said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." As we honor Martin Luther King Jr., we acknowledge the strides made towards equality while recognizing the ongoing work necessary to fulfill his dream.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we solemnly reflect on the immense human cost of hatred and intolerance during one of history's darkest chapters. We honor the millions of innocent lives lost and recommit ourselves to fostering empathy and tolerance; that is why I brought forth the resolution for our City Council to adopt the non-binding International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism to which Brevard County followed our lead and did the same. Let this day be a powerful reminder to confront injustice, stand against discrimination, and build a future marked by compassion and the unwavering protection of human rights for all.

In closing, I want to remind everyone to save the date of March 23, 2024, for the annual Mayor's Ball charity fundraiser. As Mayor of the greatest city on the face of the Earth, I feel it is my duty to give back to the community, and I have chosen a very special recipient: Serene Harbor.

Serene Harbor, a state-certified domestic violence shelter and resource center, has diligently served the community for 31 years, providing critical support to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. Established in 1992, Serene Harbor's mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence in Brevard County through a multifaceted approach encompassing education, empowerment, intervention, prevention, social change, advocacy, and community engagement.

At the heart of their operations is the provision of emergency shelter, offering a safe haven to women, children, and even pets fleeing abusive environments. Last fiscal year, Serene Harbor provided an astounding 7,470 nights of emergency shelter, assisting 1,680 individuals in their courageous efforts to escape domestic violence.

The spectrum of services offered by Serene Harbor is vast, including a 24/7 crisis hotline, counseling, support groups, case management, career, and financial resource programs, education and mentoring empowerment programs, relocation assistance, housing assistance, legal support, civil injunction legal representation, and legal advocacy. These services are provided at no cost, aiding survivors in their journey toward personal and professional goals and offering newfound hope for a life free from violence.

I sincerely hope you will consider supporting Serene Harbor by sponsoring the 2024 Mayor's Ball. We have several different sponsorship levels available for your consideration, ranging from our Friend of the Mayor's Ball sponsor up to our premier Platinum sponsors. As a sponsor, your organization will be identified as a valued community partner and supporter of Serene Harbor. This is an excellent opportunity to support a great cause and gain positive exposure for your company. As a business with strong ties to our community, you are an intricate part of making this event a success!
